Are you influenced by watches celebrities wear, or by watches in movies?

Are you more likely to buy a watch if it is featured in a movie and/or worn by your favorite actor or actress looking awesome while wearing it?

Does a watch seem cooler and more desirable to you after the movie, despite how you felt about it before you saw the movie?

Is there a specific actor, actress, or model that can sell you anything?! Like you immediately feel that you NEED something that your favorite celeb is wearing for no apparent reason other than they are wearing it, and you go out a buy it without thinking? Please leave a comment below and let me know if this happens to you too.

As for me, after seeing Transporter 2 I went out and bought 3 different Panerai, not all in one day though :) But it was totally because of Jason Statham’s awesomeness driving the Audi in that movie, also the gratuitous Panerai shots helped too. Then, I eventually got tired of the watches and sold them all, I guess that makes me a total “Watch Slut” ??? :) heheheh.

From The Transporter 2:

This is what I get from them scene in the movie: “Hmm, I wonder what time it is? Ooh let me look down at my sexy Panerai and see! You know you want to go out a buy one”

What I am getting from them scene : “Ooh, look at me performing death-defying moves while wearing my Panerai, look how sexy it looks in the water! You better go out and buy one

Also, if my favorite super model, Alessandra Ambrosio, tells me I need something or wears a certain watch, I have to physically stop myself from buying it! Even if it looks ridiculous…. So sad… is this a girl thing? or does this happen to you too???? Please leave a comment and let me know.

From the ‘05 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show:

What I get from this picture: “Buy this, now! And you will look like a super model too!”

The Breitling for Bentley looks so ridiculous on her but i guess it kinda goes with the whole VS Fashion show theme of extravagance and larger than life…but wow. I cant imagine a woman wearing that… :)

It’s interesting you mention the ties between Hollywood and Panerai. If it wasn’t for Sylvester Stallone and his movie Daylight, Panerai as we know it would have never happened :) . Sometimes product placements do get out of hand, like in Rambo 3, where he’s wearing a $10k watch! Where did Rambo get the funds to get that watch; unless of course, he killed someone and took it :) . But he seemed to not want to kill at the start of the movie, so that seems unlikely ;) .

All kidding aside, great marketing sells products… I mean racing is a great way to sell stuff… I don’t like Rolex, but I really respect the effectiveness of their marketing machine, which is awesome. They’ve done a great job to build a brand, which more often that not, in my experience, doesn’t live up to the marketing.

I have to admit that I bought my Chopard Mille Miglia after reading a good story of the fabled race, but not because someone famous was wearing one. I especially enjoy the vintage racing tire tread strap. It’s a good mix of watch and car geek.

Of course, I will admit looking at the Richard Mille watch made for Felipe Massa…not that I would buy it, of course.

I NOTICE the watches they wear, but it doesn’t influence me. With that being said, I do have a Tag-Heuer Monaco like Steve McQueen on my wish list ; ) (from the movie Grand Prix, with the famous 2 fingered salute). I had purchased a Chanel J12 (leather strap, not the ceramic) for my wife long before I saw all the little Hollywood gals wearing them…

      Hi Bo,

Well it seems like the movie and Steve McQueen might have influenced you in buying the watch or at least made you more excited about it? no? I am not saying that you bought the watch mindlessly just because he wore it, some people do that though, but i think most awesome movies and starts have some sort of influence. I do love the ceramic Chanel watches! A lot of my favorite super models wear them (i am kinda obsessed with supermodels, mostly because i can never be one, i was born about 6 inches too short!). Michele makes an awesome women’s ceramic watch too, it is on my wish list for this Christmas. You wife might like that one.

  5. I am not influenced by what watches celebrities wear or what watches are in the movies.

I think I just notice them on celebrities or in movies……”Oh….is that a new model?”

By I guess celebrity endorsements do help some brands or certain models of the watch brand like Sylvester Stallone for Panerai and Cindy Crawford for the Omega.

      Argyle,

I think the celebs tend to increase awareness of the brand, or a specific model to the mass public. But for people who follow watches they might have already seen it before. I do really enjoy seeing the watches in action in movies or on TV though. It makes the watch look cooler to me, and sometimes makes me want to go to the store and try it on. So i think i am influenced by celebrities :) .

I think it is awesome what Stallone did for Panerai. What is your favorite watch from a movie or tv show?
